Was King David Gay?

Was King David Gay?

"I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him. My hand will sustain him, and my arm will make him strong. No enemy will subject him to tribute; no unjust man will oppress him. I will crush his adversaries before him and destroy his enemies. My faithfulness and my love will be with him, and by my name his power will increase." Psalm 89:20-24

Many people have argued that David was homosexual because he kissed Jonathan and said that the love he felt for him was superior to that of women. However, we must be careful not to say that someone is gay, even if they have already died, without them actually being gay. It is necessary to analyze if there is evidence of this.

David kissed Jonah because it was Jewish custom to kiss an authority figure on the cheek. We must remember that Jonah was a prince. Judas also kissed Jesus in the act of betrayal. Jesus was seen as a teacher. Regarding the love being greater than that of women, it was because Jonah was his brother-in-law. David saw him as a brother. For David, brotherly love (storge) was greater than the love of a man for a woman (eros).

Some evidence that David was not gay:

1- David had several wives and concubines (women who were not officially married to him). Among them: Michal (Jonah's sister), Ahinoam, and Abigail.

2- The Law of Moses prohibited romantic relationships between men.

3- David was a king faithful to God and did not oppress his people during his 40 years of reign. However, in one of the few instances where he acted wrongly, it was precisely in an episode involving a woman. He committed adultery with Uriah's wife, Bathsheba.

4- Orthodox Jews also interpret these texts as portraying David as heterosexual and having only a friendship with Jonathan.

Therefore, David was not gay, but rather heterosexual. We must look at the text through the lens of Jewish culture and not Brazilian culture, since it is a Jewish text.
