What is cult?

What is cult?

2 Peter 2:1: "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies..."

A cult, in the theological sense, is a group that preaches heresies. Generally, it is a smaller, dissident group within a larger group. For example, Christianity itself, in its early stages, was considered by some to be a sect of Judaism. Cults are often also attributed with radical characteristics. Some of them forbid their members from having friendships with people outside the cult, isolate them from their families, and claim that only their institution possesses all truth.

When a cult grows and moderates its practices, it may gain the status of a religion. In the case of a Christian cult, it will need to bring its practices closer to what is contained in the word of God. Otherwise, even if it grows, it will continue to have the status of a cult. Therefore, make no mistake, there are sects that moderate their practices and are accepted by society, but even so, they remain sects because they go against fundamental precepts of the Holy Bible.

Sects need to be combated through argumentation, otherwise they can grow and become the new paradigm. They can dominate churches and completely destroy their spiritual life. Remember that God does not do what is meant for human beings to do. Try taking a test without studying beforehand. You will probably fail. Similarly, if we do not pray and defend the Christian faith, sects and heresies multiply and become like the sand on the beach.
